This original charcoal drawing was made using an additive/subtractive process. In this work, I coat the entire page with charcoal powder, subtracting from the surface with erasers and rags to achieve the gesture and highlights, and adding to the surface with hard and soft charcoal pencils to render the form and reinforce shadows.
